There is an interesting article in the Science section of today's NY Times concerning studies that are being conducted on the science of instruments. It mostly talks about violins with some dicussion of guitars but deals with alternative materials, whether aging or the amount of playing affects an instrument's sound, how the structure of an instrument affects its sound, how vibrations travel through an instrument, etc. Pretty good stuff.

I didn't have time to read the article yet, but the violin bridge at the top
photo is certainly one of Joseph Curtin's here in Ann Arbor. Very innovative
and respected builder who won a MacArthur Foundation Genius award a year
or two ago. I'll have to pick up a Times copy today.
